3/15/25 Advanced Weaving: Floor Loom, Unlimited* time, 8 weeks
Taught by: Anton Sarossy-Christon
*This class gives Advanced weavers the opportunity to join a community of weavers and weave on our looms anytime the store is open for business or classes. Maximum 12 students, minimum 4. Ages 16 and up.
This class officially meets every Wednesday from 12:00-3:00, or Saturdays from 11:00-2:00, which coincides with our Intermediate Weaving class, however, you're welcome to use the studio anytime the store is open.
This class is intended for students who have already taken our Beginning and Intermediate Weaving class series. Once students have completed these two classes, they may enroll in Advanced Weaving. The Advanced Weaving class enables students to choose the times they wish to weave (Weaving Studio is accessible only during Store hours or Class times) and gives students virtually unlimited time to weave on our looms using our equipment. Students also have access to our extensive weaving library and weaving magazine collection as well as consultation with Anton regarding the planning of their projects. Students signing up for this class should be able to wind a warp using a minimum of 4 ends at a time with a skarn, be able to make a raddle and theading cross on the warping board, dress a loom back to front, and understand the basics of reading a weaving draft.
If you’re already a seasoned weaver and are looking for a place to join a weaving community, it may not be necessary to take the first 2 series of classes, just call or email Anton BEFORE enrolling, and we’ll discuss your skill level to ensure this class is a fit for you.
Please note that while advanced weaving students may come to weave anytime the store is open, structured instruction with Anton is only available during official class times (Wed/Thurs 12-3 or Sat 11-2). Students coming in to weave during non-class times weave with the understanding that no instruction or assistance will be provided by Anton at those times.
Supplies: There is no supply fee for this class, as students will purchase their warp and weft yarns on their own based upon the requirements of their projects. Weaving yarn is available on site.
Students will be required to have their own (labeled) shuttles, scissors, and tape measures. Students have full access to all other studio equipment.
Looms: Gorges Fibers has both table and floor looms (jack, counterbalance, countermarch) ranging from 2-12 shafts and 1-6 ft weaving width. We use mostly Lelerc, Harrisville, and Schacht looms in the studio. We practice the tradition of weaving in socks, or slippers with soft soles so as not to produce wear marks on the treadles, please be prepared to remove your shoes when weaving.
Since looms cannot be shared between students it is important that all projects be completed in a timely manner so that other students have use of the looms. Unless a student enrolls in the 8 week session directly following the one they’re enrolled in, all projects must be completed by the last day of the enrolled 8 week session. Projects left on looms beyond 1 week after the enrolled session ends will become the property of Gorges Fiber Arts.
Refund / Class credit policy: We cannot offer refunds unless we cancel the class, in which case you will be fully refunded for the missed session(s).
