$300.00
sold out

Taught by: Anton Sarossy-Christon

This class meets for up to 8 consecutive* weeks, maximum 4 students. Ages 16 and up.

Saturdays 11:00-2:00PM, 195 Main St, Owego, NY 13827

*Up to 24 hours of instruction

Students will learn the basics of weaving beginning with the vocabulary of weaving, and will learn the names of the different parts of the loom as well as the terminology used in the weaving process. Students will learn how to use a warping board and wind a warp. Following this, students will learn to dress a loom and set up their tools for weaving in preparation for learning the basics of woven structures. All students will have an opportunity to weave the different structures and will have a sampler to take home at the end of the term. The last class will include an introduction to finishing techniques and reading of weaving drafts. If students decide to continue into the Intermediate Weaving class, we’ll discuss the next project, and begin selecting materials.

*Depending on your level of previous experience or speed you may finish the course up to 2 weeks early. Most students take the full 8 weeks to finish weaving their sampler. Should you finish early and wish to continue weaving with us, we’ll work with you to begin planning your next project(s) right away!

Worried about missing a class? Make-up days are often available on weekends, just ask!

Supplies: There is no supply fee for this class, all supplies will be provided, but students should bring a measuring tape, a pen/pencil, and a notebook. Students are encouraged to bring yarn from home for trying different color and texture effects.

We practice the tradition of weaving in socks, or slippers with soft soles so as not to produce wear marks on the treadles, please be prepared to remove your shoes when weaving.

Since looms cannot be shared between students it is important that all projects be completed in a timely manner so that other students have use of the looms. Unless a student enrolls in the next 8 week session directly following the one they’re enrolled in, all projects must be completed by the last day of the enrolled 8 week session. Projects left on looms beyond 1 week after the enrolled session ends will become the property of Gorges Fiber Arts.

Intermediate and Advanced weavers looking for studio time to weave should contact us as special reduced rates are available for independent weavers not looking for formal instruction, but looking to weave with an established weaving community.

Refund / Class credit policy: We cannot offer refunds unless we cancel the class, in which case you will be fully refunded for the missed session(s).
