sold out

Taught by: Anton Sarossy-Christon

This class meets for 8 consecutive weeks* on Wednesdays from 12:00-3:00PM, maximum 12 students, minimum 4. Ages 16 and up.

24 hours of instruction

This class is intended for students interested in moving on beyond our Beginning Weaving class. Students will work with the instructor to design their own projects by either picking an item to weave from a weaving draft, or, using the many resources we have available, to design a project from the ground up. Students will choose a draft or modify one to fit their project. Students signing up for this class should be able to wind a warp with minimal assistance, and will decide on which warp and weft yarns to use. Students should be familiar with, but not expert at, dressing a loom either front to back, or back to front, and the basics of reading a draft. Don’t worry, assistance will be available for each step in the process!

Beginning Weaving students who continue on to Intermediate Weaving will learn how to wind a 4 yard or longer warp using a minimum of 4 ends at a time with a skarn. Students will learn how to create a raddle cross at one end of the warping board, and a threading cross at the other end. Looms will be dressed back to front. Warping and dressing in this manner is extremely efficient and speedy, and has been used by weavers for centuries!

Weavers interested in signing up for this class who have not been through the Beginning Weaving Class should first contact Anton by phone or email to discuss their weaving experience and learning objectives. Weaving projects should be planned and materials purchased BEFORE the first day of class so as to make the most of your 8 week term. The first day of class will be dedicated to warping, not planning, as planning will have been done in advance.

Worried about missing a class? Make up days are available, just ask!

Supplies: There is no supply fee for this class, as students will purchase their warp and weft yarns on their own based upon the requirements of their projects. Weaving yarn is available on site. Students are encouraged to bring a notebook, pen/pencil, and a tape measure.

We practice the tradition of weaving in socks, or slippers with soft soles so as not to produce wear marks on the treadles, please be prepared to remove your shoes when weaving.

Since looms cannot be shared between students it is important that all projects be completed in a timely manner so that other students have use of the looms. Unless a student enrolls in the 8 week session directly following the one they’re enrolled in, all projects must be completed by the last day of the enrolled 8 week session. Projects left on looms beyond 1 week after the enrolled session ends will become the property of Gorges Fiber Arts.

Intermediate and Advanced weavers looking for studio time to weave should contact the Center as special reduced rates are available for independent weavers not looking for formal instruction, but looking to weave with an established weaving community.

Refund / Class credit policy: We cannot offer refunds unless we cancel the class, in which case you will be fully refunded for the missed session(s).
